Three cheques with a total face value of $7.2 million, have led to the arrest and detention of a Filipina domestic helper and a Chinese driver after prosecutors jointly accused them of theft before the West Kowloon Court.
Marie Judith Frianela, 62 years old, and her co-worker Wong Kong Hafee, 60, were arrested by the police on July 12 for the alleged theft.

They were initially charged with stealing the three Standard Chartered cheques belonging to Lee Lai Chun in his home at 64 Tat Chee Avenue, Sham Shui Po, between Dec. 15, 2023 and May 2 this year.
But the charge was later amended to stealing a "chose in action" or a debt in the amount of $7,185,000 owed by the bank to Lee, indicating the cheques had been cashed.

Under section 9 of the Theft Ordinance, theft is punishable
by up to 10 years in prison.
