Seniors get top priority for the new XBB Covid-19 vaccines |
Starting at 9am today, Wednesday, elderly residents or those aged 65 and above can make an online booking to receive XBB mRNA vaccine against Covid-19 at private clinics, community vaccination stations or designated outpatient clinics or elderly health centres under the Hospital Authority.
The vaccination can be done starting tomorrow, Dec.
14.

The government said in a statement that the latest
vaccination arrangement is aimed at providing better protection for high-risk groups
and for Covid-19 being managed gradually as a type of upper respiratory tract
infections.

The vaccination will start following the arrival of
100,000 doses of XBB mRNA vaccines (Comirnaty Omicron XBB.1.5 30mcg/dose) in
Hong Kong earlier. Another batch of about 100,000 doses of XBB mRNA vaccines
(Spikevax XBB.1.5 0.1 mg/mL) from another manufacturer will also arrive in Hong
Kong soon. Scientific data shows that the efficacy and safety profile of the
two vaccines are similar.
However, people may still opt to receive inactivated
vaccines (CoronaVac/Sinovac).

Experts advising the government on its vaccination program
have recommended that the following can receive an additional Covid-19 vaccine
booster for free regardless of the number of vaccine doses they received
earlier. But they should get the booster at least six months after the last
dose, or recovery from Covid-19 infection:
-
people aged 50 and above, including those
in residential care homes,
-
adults aged 18 to 49 years with underlying
comorbidities,
-
persons aged 6 months or above and with
immunocompromising conditions,
-
pregnant women and healthcare workers)

Those aged 65 and above get top priority for the XBB
vaccine, while the start of the second phase to include the other vulnerable
groups will be announced by the
government in due course.
As before, the experts recommend that people receive
both the Covid-19 and seasonal flu vaccines to guard against a possible upsurge
in the number of infections during the winter season.
They also say that all currently available Covid-19
vaccines are effective in preventing severe disease. Thus, persons aged below
65 should receive any available Covid-19 vaccine as soon as possible instead of
waiting for the XBB vaccines.
Details of the Covid-19 vaccination program can be found at the Centre for Health Protection’s website - www.chp.gov.hk/en/features/106934.html.
