Both defendants appeared in Eastern Court today |
Two Filipinos, one a domestic helper, and another a bartender, appeared before Magistrate Minnie Wat in Eastern Court earlier today, each charged with assaulting a fellow Filipino.
Connie L. Vergara, 47, firmly pleaded “not guilty”
after the charge of assault occasioning bodily harm (AOBH) against her was read
out.
She is accused of assaulting and as a result,
causing harm to Bicmar H. Gumarac on July 29 at Room F, 2/F, Pak Lee Building in

Because of her not guilty plea, a trial was set for
December 12 this year, and her $500 bail was extended until then.
The prosecution said it will present three witnesses
against the accused while the defense lawyer said that she will not call any
witnesses if Vergara’s own medical certificate is admitted as part of the evidence.
Separately, Mark Anthony S. Malunao, 35 years old,
was charged with assaulting fellow Filipino Edgardo A. Sumang opposite the bus
stop at 5 Chater Road, Central, on July 9 this year.
PINDUTIN PARA SA DETALYE |
No plea was taken from him and his bail of $500 was
extended until the next hearing set on Nov. 29.
The case was adjourned for further legal advice.
AOBH is prohibited under section 39 of the Offenses
Against the Person Ordinance, for which the prescribed maximum sentence is
three years in jail.
BASAHIN ANG DETALYE |
Common assault, on the other hand, is punishable
under section 40 of the same Ordinance, and carries a lighter punishment of up
to a year’s imprisonment.
