About 100 Filipinos were tricked into paying huge sums for fake jobs in Italy |
The Department of Migrant Workers has denounced what it called the “massive illegal recruitment” of Filipinos to Italy, after receiving reports last week that about 100 people were lured into the jobs scam.
A statement issued by the DMW on Monday Oct. 2, said the victims were charged exorbitant placement and consultancy fees in exchange for non-existent jobs in Italy.
The DMW said it was coordinating with both the
Department of Foreign Affairs and the Philippine Consulate and Migrant Workers
Office in Milan in the investigation of the agencies and individuals both in
Italy and the Philippines, who had allegedly duped the victims.

The alleged victims are also getting help from the Department
of Justice and the DMW’s Migrant Workers Protection Bureau (formerly
Anti-Illegal Recruitment Office) in documenting and investigating their
complaints.
The DMW warned that it will “put the full force of
the law to bear on unscrupulous individuals and organizations and seek justice
for victimized OFWs.”
Last September 15 the DMW issued a similar warning against eight unlicensed visa consultancy companies which were said to be engaged in illegal recruitment as they were enticing OFWs to work and study in Canada.

Under the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration guidelines, all consultancy companies must apply for a license with them, no matter what visa they are offering to applicants.
Among those named in the advisory was Opportunities
Abroad, which is the subject of a complaint filed by 14 OFWs in Hong Kong, who
were each enticed to apply for a supposed work and study program in Canada, for
which most were charged the equivalent of P132,000 each.
The case is now with the Hong Kong Police and DMW
investigators.

The DMW urged other victims of illegal recruitment
to report to them so appropriate charges may be filed against those who defrauded
them.
