5 overstayers among 18 people arrested in latest anti-illegal worker operations

The Immigration Department has kept up its territory-wide crackdown on illegal work, with 18 more arrests being reported over the past three days until yesterday, Oct. 26.

In the latest round, five overstayers were among those detained, along with 10 suspected illegal workers and three employers.

In a series of operations codenamed “Twilight,” 17 locations were targeted, including industrial and residential buildings, restaurants and retail shops.

Five suspected illegal workers and three employers were arrested. The workers comprised one man and four women, age 37 to 46, and included a woman holding a recognizance form which prohibits her from taking employment.

Two men and one woman, aged 35 to 54, were suspected of employing the illegal workers and were also arrested.

In a separate operation named “Champion,” police and Immigration officers raided 52 locations in New Territories North and Western District, including recycling yards and warehouses.

This was where the five overstayers were found, comprising three males and two females, aged 34 to 46.

Arrested along with them were five suspected illegal workers made up of four men and one woman aged 32 to 64.

Immigration reiterated its warning that violating any of the conditions granted to those entering Hong Kong such as overstaying or taking up prohibited work is a serious offence that is punishable by up to two years in jail and a maximum fine of $50,000.

The penalty is more severe if the illegal work is done by an overstayer, or those on recognizance who are not allowed to take up work. The maximum sentence is three years’ imprisonment and $50,000 fine.

Employers face even graver punishment, with the maximum fine going up to $500,000 and a jail term of up to 10 years.
