Super Typhoon Saola expected to weaken as it moves toward HK Friday night

A super typhoon just leaving the Philippines, where it dumped heavy rains that have swamped most of Luzon, is veering towards Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta which will begin to feel its presence by Friday night.

Super typhoon Goring (international name Saola) has winds of up to 165 kilometers per hour near the center and wind speed of  up to 230 kph. 

But it, is expected to weaken as it sweeps Northern Luzon and moves towards Hong Kong and China’s southern coast on Frida afternoon, according to the Philippine Athmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

Another cyclone, Severe Tropical Storm Haikui, is too far to have any effect on Hong Kong. As of 7pm today, Haikui was centered about 1,180 kilometers southeast of Okinawa and forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 18 kilometers per hour towards the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.

Hong Kong will start to feel the effects of Super Typhoon Saola by Friday night, with rains and gusts that will intensify as the typhoon approaches, according to forecasts from the Hong Kong Observatory.

The super typhoon is expected to be nearest Hong Kong by 2pm Saturday, Pagasa’s weather maps showed.

As a result, heavy rains are expected until Sunday and ease off starting Monday.

But the coming typhoon has nothing to do with the rains that fell yesterday afternoon in most of Hong Kong.

The Observatory said it was brought by a low pressure area, supplied with moist air by the northeast monsoon east of Hong Kong.

“Locally, more than 20 millimeters of rainfall were recorded over parts of the territory in the afternoon, and rainfall even exceeded 90 millimeters over the northern part of the New Territories, “ it said.

The Observatory expects Hong Kong to again be sunny tomorrow and Thursday, until the first rains and gust of the coming typhoon arrive.
