Filcoms are urged to join Coins for Bethune and help the shelter continue its mission |
Coins for Bethune, the community-wide fundraising event for Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge, will be re-launched this Sunday, July 9, on Chater Road in Central.
The campaign, launched in 2011, was temporarily
halted during the pandemic although Bethune House continued to provide shelter,
food and financial help to migrant workers in need, including those who
contracted Covid-19 or were in mandatory quarantine.

Filipino community leaders and other supporters are
invited to take part in the launch which will start at 10:30am in the morning
at the BH tent along Chater Road, where the anniversary celebration of United
Filipinos in Hong Kong will be held at the same time.
Cans with the Coins for Bethune stickers will be
distributed among the donors, who are encouraged to fill them with loose
change, then submit them anytime afterwards to the Mission for Migrant Office
at St John’s Cathedral on Garden Road.

Coins for Bethune is a campaign that enjoins individuals,
organizations and businesses to help sustain the 37-year-old shelter’s programs
and expenses for migrant domestic workers through ways as simple as giving them
their spare coins.
Apart from helping raise much-needed funds, the
project aims to raise public awareness about what the shelter does to help
migrant women who not only need a roof over their heads, but also support with
their cases and other needs.

Bethune House executive director Edwina Antonio is
making a special appeal for help, as the shelter’s resources were largely
depleted during the pandemic.
“As many
people could imagine, the recent Covid-19 hit us hard, with a big number of
migrant workers knocking on our doors for help, from extra food while in
quarantine, to finding shelter after they were thrown out of their employer’s
house after contracting Covid-19,” said Antonio.

“We are always grateful for the support of everyone
who extends help to our migrant workers in distress.”
Bethune House, which cares for up to 30 migrant
women in its two shelters in Sheung Wan and Jordan, needs at least $150,000
each month to pay for rent, food, visa expenses and other essentials.
BASAHIN DITO |
It is funded entirely from private donations as it
does not get help from any government.
