13 more alleged illegal workers have been arrested |
A Vietnamese woman who was arrested while working illegally at a fish stall in Shau Kei Wan was jailed for 20 months on Wednesday, despite pleading guilty to two charges filed against her.
According to a government press release issued on Friday, Immigration
officers who arrested the 45-year-old woman on July 10 found out that she was holding
a recognizance document, and was using a forged Hong Kong identity card.

A person suspected of employing her was also arrested and is
still under investigation.
The worker was charged at Shatin Court on July 12 with
taking employment while under a removal or deportation order and another of
using a forged HKID card. After pleading guilty she was sentenced to 20 months
imprisonment on each count, which she must serve concurrently.

Immigration again warned that under section 38AA of the
Immigration Ordinance, a person subject to a removal or deportation order, or
an overstayer, is prohibited from taking up work, whether paid or unpaid.
Offenders can be jailed for up to three years and fined $50,000.
A more serious penalty awaits those who use or possess a forged
HKID card, as they can be jailed for up to 10 years and fines a maximum of
$100,000.

Meanwhile, the government also announced the arrest of 17
people in a four-day anti-illegal work sweep, from July 10 to 13.
Those arrested were 13 suspected illegal workers comprising
five men and eight women aged 23 to 58; and four suspected employers made up of
three men and one woman aged 58 to 63.

Of the arrested workers, two were found to be in possession
of forged HKID cards while two others were asylum seekers.
Employers, meanwhile, were again warned that they would face
a hefty prison sentence if they hire someone who has no permission to work in
Hong Kong. Violators can be fined up to $500,000 and jailed for up to 10 years.

Aside from these, the High Court has ruled that the employer
of an illegal worker should be given an immediate custodial sentence.
