The arrest was over the deployment of a FDH in Hong Kong |
Hong Kong customs has announced the arrest of a
female director and sales person of an employment agency in Hung Hom for
allegedly providing misleading information in selling the company’s services.
The arrest on Feb 23 came after customs agents
investigated a report about the suspect failing to tell a customer that he was
required to pay an extra charge apart from the agency fees, before a foreign
domestic helper he was hiring could be brought into Hong Kong.
The 50-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of
contravening the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO) but was released on bail
pending further investigation.
Customs reminds traders to comply with the TDO and
consumers to procure services only from reputable vendors. Customers should
examine the terms and conditions of the sales agreement, and when in doubt,
should not sign the document.
Under the TDO, any trader who omits, hides, or does
not make clear any material information from a consumer while engaged in the
sale of products or services, could be held liable for unfair trade practice, and
punished with a fine of up to $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
Any suspected violations of the TDO may be reported
to Customs’ 24-hour hotline, 2545 6182, or its dedicated crime-reporting
email account (crimereport@customs.gov.hk).
