The Omicron variant continues to spread within Hong Kong |
Hong Kong has recorded a total of 17,080 new Covid cases on Thursday, the highest daily tally since late March.
A government statement said 831 of the cases were imported and more than half of them, or 474, were detected on arrival at the airport.

Of the positive local cases, 3,000 were detected through PCR tests, and the rest, through rapid antigen tests or RATs.
Nineteen more patients with coronavirus have died.

Of the local cases, 893 were reported from schools at various levels, leading to the suspension of 20 classes. Infections were also found in 23 care homes for the elderly and nine in facilities for the disabled.

Meanwhile, Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau is under home quarantine after a member of his household tested positive for Covid-19.

A government statement said the health chief will work from home during his quarantine. He tested negative on a PCR test conducted yesterday, and on a rapid antigen test earlier today.
