The best way to protect kids is still through vaccination, doctors say (File)

A doctor at the Hospital Authority has warned parents to be wary of their children being infected with the coronavirus and developing a potentially dangerous respiratory infection called Croup.

Dr Lau Ka-hin said at the press briefing on Monday that this was what happened to a 20-month-old baby who tested positive at home on Friday. She was rushed to United Christian Hospital yesterday in poor condition, with fever and shortness of breath.

The baby was initially put in the intensive care unit but after she was given oral medication her condition became stable overnight, and she was transferred to a general pediatric isolation ward today.

According to Lau, the baby’s breathing had an “abnormal sound” which turned out to be one of the symptoms of Croup, an infection that causes the trachea or windpipe, to be inflamed.

“So we urge parents that…if you notice breathing difficulty or abnormal sound from your child’s breathing, you should bring your child to the A&E department for medical treatment,” said Lau.

As vaccine is proven to be effective in preventing serious complications from Covid even among children, Lau urged parents to get their kids jabbed if they are at least six months old.

He also reported the deaths of seven people who tested positive for Covid-19, all elderly people aged 66 to 88, causing the death tally from the fifth wave to rise to 9,334.

Among them was a 68-year-old man who was taken to hospital on Aug 6 following an accident and tested positive for Covid. His death was included in the Covid tally in line with the 28-day rule, but further investigation will be made to find out the cause of death.

Another was a 66-year-old woman who tested positive for the virus on Jul 31 through a rapid antigen test, but did not seek medical help although she had a fever and phlegm.

She was found unconscious at home yesterday by family members and was rushed to hospital where she was declared dead. The patient had no chronic ailments and had received three vaccine doses.

Chuang says the most dominant sub-variant is still BA.2

Meanwhile, the Centre for Health Protection reported a daily Covid caseload of 4,040, the lowest in more than two weeks. It is lower by more than 200 compared with yesterday’s tally of 4,274.

CHP’s Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said local cases accounted for 3,807 and the remaining 233 were all imported infections.

Among the imported cases, 103 were detected at the airport, 98 at quarantine hotels, and 32 after the travelers had ended their seven-day isolation.

Chuang said the number of suspected BA.4 or BA.5 cases continued to rise, and now make up 12.7 percent of the total, exceeding BA.2.12.1 which accounts for 6.3%. However, the most prevalent variant is still BA.2.

Of the local cases, 692 were reported by schools over the past few days, involving 541 students and 151 teachers and staffers. Eleven schools have had to suspend classes for a week.

As of this morning, 1,528 Covid patients are receiving treatment in public hospitals, and they include 24 who are in critical condition and 22 who are listed as serious.
