Health code may become an added feature of the LeaveHomeSafe app |
The LeaveHomeSafe app on your phone, which the government designed to ensure users’ privacy, may soon require you to register using your real name.
In addition, it may soon be linked up with a health code system in which the health risks of those arriving from abroad will be classified into three levels, with visitors falling under the highest level not allowed to enter Hong Kong, while arriving residents with this classification will be barred entry at some restaurants, when they scan their app at the entrance.

Health Secretary Professor Lo Chung Mau defended the plans against criticism of intruding into people’s personal lives.
"If we let the confirmed patients go around freely, the freedom of us who were not confirmed will be restricted," he said in a television interview.
Lo said he was studying the health code systems being implemented in China and Macau, which require people arriving from abroad to declare their health status, their exposure to Covid-19 and list of places they travelled to in the last 21 days.

The health code applicants will fall into three classifications -- green, yellow and red – and given their respective CR code.
Fears of arbitrary isolation or segregation have been raised over such system as the government has not explained in detail how people are classified using the app.
In Macau, visitors classified as red are not allowed to enter, while residents with the same classification will be sent to hospital or quarantine facilities and will not be allowed into most establishments such as restaurants and casinos.
As proposed, the CR code can be uploaded by Hong Kong residents to their LeaveHomeSafe app.

In his interview, Lo said the coding system will enhance the ability to detect patients.
At present, the LeaveHomeSafe app stores one’s vaccination status and is used as a pass by those with three jabs to enter practically all premises, and records the visit.

Once a positive case is reported in that place, the Center for Health Protection will send out alerts. The app will receive the CHP updates and compare these to its record; if the user visited the place on the same day, it will notify the user to undergo mandatory testing.
