The Centre for Health
Protection has refused to comment on coronavirus infections among officials who
attended Hong Kong’s handover anniversary celebration where Chinese President
Xi Jinping was the guest of honor.
Dr Albert Au said he
would not comment on individual cases. He added that a general investigation
would be conducted and family members and everyone the infected person had
face-to-face contact with would be classified as close contacts.
Earlier, Steven Ho
Chun-yin, a member of the pro-Beijing party, Democratic Alliance for the
Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong confirmed he tested positive for Covid-19.

He had posed for a
group photo with President Xi on Thursday, and tested indeterminate the next
day, so he skipped other Handover events.
Ho was the second DAB
member to test positive during the recent festivities. Tam Yiu-chung, Hong
Kong's sole representative to the National People’s Congress, tested positive on
Thursday and had to stay away from all events.
Au’s statement came during
the daily conference, when he also reported a total of 1,828 new infections,
including 147 imported cases.

He said that the cases
may be lower than it should be because of community testing centers had to
close yesterday when the storm signal no 8 was up until late in the afternoon.
Among the imported
cases, 80 were detected at the airport, 58 at quarantine hotels and nine after
the seven-day compulsory quarantine.
The total tally from
the fifth wave is now 1.239 million.

No new death was
reported so the overall fatality toll remains at 9,192.
Three new cases were
reported by customers who had been to Hotpot Foodie in Kwun Tong, raising the
number of cases in the cluster to 14.
The restaurant was not
found to have violated any anti-pandemic regulation, and all its staff, as well
as the environmental samples taken from the place tested negative for the
virus.

Au said that the more
contagious Omicron sub-variants, BA.4 or BA. 5 may have caused the outbreak as
there was nothing wrong with the restaurant’s ventilation.
New results from
genome sequencing revealed 28 cases previously reported were carrying BA.4 or
BA.5, three of them imported and the rest, locally acquired.
Another 23 cases were
found to carry the BA.2.12.1 sub-variant, among which 20 were unlinked to other
infections.
