Some of the 601 patients receiving treatment are in the North Lantau Hospital

Health officials reported 1,917 new Covid-19 cases Sunday, 118 of which were imported.

Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection said it’s likely the numbers will reach 2,000 soon because there is a slow but increasing trend in Covid infections.

The total number of infections from the fifth wave has now exceed 1.225 million while related deaths remain at 9,185 as no new fatality was reported today.

Eleven more local cases of BA.2.12.1 Omicron sub-variant were detected, including two diners at Victoria Harbour Restaurant in Tuen Mun, where an outbreak has led to 42 people getting infected. Five of the cases are untraceable.

A cluster of cases at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin continues to grow. One more nurse and a staff assisting patients in the oncology department were tested positive Saturday, raising the number of cases there to eight.

The ward has stopped admitting patients while it undergoes thorough cleaning and disinfection. The HA is closely monitoring the situation.

At the schools, another class at St Stephen’s College has been suspended for a week, after three students and one staff member living in the dormitory there tested positive for the virus.

Chuang said the new cases appear unrelated to a previous outbreak at the school but the CHP is making further investigation.
