CE Lam has personally delivered Covid packs with rapid test kits to some residents |
Chief Executive Carrie Lam
has assured everyone who tests positive for Covid-19 during the three-day self-test
exercise that begins Friday that they can isolate at home as long as their
living environment is considered suitable.
The assurance came amid fears
those who report their positive results on the rapid tests will be forcibly
taken to isolation facilities.
According to Dr Edwin Tsui,
controller of the Centre for Health Protection, it would be best for people
isolating at home to stay in separate rooms and use a separate washroom to
prevent cross-infection among family members.

Tsui said it will not be
appropriate to allow home isolation for infected people if their households
included small children, people who are aged over 7 or have weak immune
systems.
All residents are encouraged
to test themselves daily from Friday to Sunday, to allow the government to
better gauge the city’s Covid situation.
CE Lam sought to assure the
public that even if a large number of Covid-19 cases are reported during the
three days of self-testing, the government will have enough room for them at
community isolation facilities.

“You need not worry about our
capacity. We have the capacity and that’s why we’re proceeding with this very
meaningful and useful exercise,” she said.
The CE said there are 20,000
beds available at six isolation facilities on top of rooms at isolation hotels
and entire flats at a new housing block that could be used by those who get positive
results on their rapid tests.

Apart from these, she said the authorities
are able to quickly deliver food and other daily necessities to patients who
are allowed to self-isolate at home.
She also warned that some premises may in future
require visitors to undergo rapid antigen tests before being allowed entry,
adding that this is already being implemented with care home workers, construction
workers and frontline medical staff.

Students who are sitting the upcoming
HKDSE exams will also be required to show a negative result for a rapid test
for each exam that they take.
Meanwhile, the SAR leader noted
that there has been an increase of about 600,000 people taking public transport
between Mar
21 and Apr 1.
