HK records 115 new Covid-19 cases

28 January 2022

By Daisy CL Mandap

The infection in Kwai Chung Estate has eased, but new outbreaks are being reported elsewhere (HKFP)

The number of coronavirus cases continues to surge in Hong Kong, with 115 additional confirmed cases being reported today, Jan 28.

Of the total figure, 111 were locally acquired, and four were imported. A majority, or 105 of the local cases were linked, and six are of unknown sources.

According to Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan of the Centre for Health Protection, the number of untraceable cases has now gone up to between 30 and 40, sparking heightened concern about the many silent transmissions now going on in the community.

She also said that as of today’s press conference, there were more than 80 preliminary positive cases.

But the infection spread in Kwai Chung Estate has considerably slowed, with only four new confirmed cases reported today, one at Yat Kwai House, and three at Chin Kwai House.

The outbreak in the estate, by far the biggest in the two years of coronavirus spread in Hong Kong, has netted a total of 396 cases so far, affecting 206 residential units.

Meanwhile, the six new unlinked cases involve five Omicron and one Delta infections.

The sole suspected Delta case involves a 70-year-old female retiree who lives in Tsz Ching Estate and the only possible connection the CHP could establish is that she had gone to Choi Wan Shopping Centre where a number of cases have been detected.

The five Omicron cases involve the following:

1)     a 38-year-old man who lives in Tin Shui Wai and works in the catering industry;

2)     a 39-year-old man who works as a delivery staff and lives in Tai Wo Hau Estate in Tai Po

3)     a 65-year-old female retiree who lives in Kwai Fong Estate and had played badminton with friends at Kwai Chung Park.

4)     a 45-year-old man who works as a clerk in the transportation industry and lives at Tai Wo Hau Estate

5)     a 10-year-old girl who studies at Lo Tak School but has not been to school since Jan 10. She spends a lot of time with relatives in Sham Tseng

Covid-19 outbreaks are being reported in various schools

Among the local cases are about nine students at the HKTA The Yuen Yuen Institute School who are in different grades.

Dr Chuang said there were a lot of students there who live in Yat Kwai House, ground zero of the update in Kwai Chung Estate.

Another outbreak has been detected at Christian Nationals Evangelism Commission Lee Yao Memorial School where five students in two classes have tested positive for the virus.

Dr Chuang said this is the first time coronavirus outbreaks have been detected in schools, which started with a student infecting a classmate and teacher at Delia Memorial School (Broadway) in Mei Foo.

She said many of the students caught Covid-19 during examinations so the only explanation is that Omicron is highly infectious.

Dr Lau Ka-hin from the Hospital Authority said 20 patients were discharged from the various public hospitals and treatment facilities in the past 24 hours. As of 9am this morning, 808 other patients are still undergoing treatment and all are stable.
