A 44-year-old Filipina domestic helper with driving duties has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after the car she had parked on Peel Street, Central at about 8pm last night, Dec 10, careered down the road and slammed onto busy Staunton Street, injuring eight people.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the driver’s nationality
to The SUN and said four of the injured persons were French, while two were
Britons. The two others are local Chinese.
According to the police report issued today, Dec 11,
the driver parked the white car on Peel Street at 8:07pm last night and got off,
along with a female passenger.

The car had rolled about 100 meters down the road before coming to a stop after hitting steel rails serving as barriers to a concrete flight of stairs

One of the victims, a 27-year-old French woman, was
trapped under the vehicle and had to be freed by a group of bystanders who
lifted the car off her.

Another French female, aged 31, also suffered multiple
head and body injuries after being struck by the runaway vehicle.
Both victims were taken to Queen Mary Hospital
unconscious, and are said to be in critical condition.

The six other victims were said to have sustained
minor injuries and were conscious when taken to Queen Mary and Ruttonjee
Hospitals.

They include a 27-year-old female who sustained foot
and shoulder injuries; a 36-year-old male who had foot injuries; a 24-year-old
female with foot injury; a 47-year-old male with waist injury; a 49-year-old
male with head, neck and shoulder injuries, and a 51-year-old male with foot
injury.

As a result of the crash, a lamppost, a government
video camera and some iron fences were damaged.
The Filipina driver was said to have tested negative
for alcohol. She is currently still detained for further investigation.

Some reports said she had forgotten to apply the hand brakes on the car before stepping out.
This was what happened exactly 3 years ago, when an empty school bus rolled downhill on Cheung Hong Street in North Point, before crossing busy King's Road, and slamming on a makeshift stall.
Four pedestrians, several of them elderly, were killed, and 11 others were injured, including two Filipino DHs.
