The new food allowance will apply to all FDH contracts signed on or after tomorrow, Oct 1.
The announcement is likely to be met with disappointment by migrant worker support groups which have called for a monthly salary of $6,014 a month, and the food allowance to go up to $2,600 a month.

Employers, on the other hand, have urged for the current minimum salary to be reduced from between 10 to 20%, citing the rising cost of hiring FDHs from abroad.
In the years before the pandemic, the government would normally grant FDHs a raise of about $100 each time.
In explaining its decision to retain the minimum wage, the government said that it reviews the MAW regularly based on market forces. This year, it included the effects of the pandemic, and the ability of employers to pay the mandated salary for domestic helpers.

FDH contracts signed today or earlier with the food still at the current level of not less than $1,121 per month will still be processed by Immigration on or before Oct 28.
