Hong Kong has not reported any local case in nearly 2 months |
Health authorities in Hong Kong are looking into the case of a 43-year-old construction worker who tested negative for Covid-19 in hospital early Wednesday, one day after testing preliminary positive in a sample submitted to a community testing center.

If he is declared as infected, he would end Hong Kong’s 57-day run of no local case being detected in the community.
The Centre for Health Protection said another test, including an antibody test, will be done this morning and give an update on the case at a press conference later today.

The man who lives in Sham Shui Po, was said to carry a
low viral load when he tested positive initially. He was asymptomatic.

He sought treatment and was tested after reportedly
experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort and palpitations.
However, repeated tests at a hospital where he was
taken all showed negative results.

Speaking on a radio program this morning, infectious
disease expert Dr Leung Chi-chiu said it was still unsure whether the man
carried a mutant strain, and where he contracted the virus.
“Authorities should see if there are loopholes in
their measures in preventing the importation of cases,” Leung said.

However, preliminary investigation revealed the man
has no travel history.
If it is a re-positive case, meaning, the man had been
infected previously and only showed remnants of the virus, then the risk of
local infection is small, he said.
