However, since a big number of the imported cases involved local residents who had been vaccinated before going overseas, the CHP reiterated its advice for everyone to avoid non-essential travel even after vaccination, in particular to places specified as extremely or very high risk.
The CHP advisory says the Covid-19 situation remains severe across the globe and there is a continuous increase in the number of cases involving mutant strains that are highly transmissible.

Many elderly people have been isolated from family members since the pandemic began |
Meanwhile, the feeling of isolation felt by many elderly
residents is cited as the reason for the spike in the number of suicides among those
aged 60 and above.
|
According to the suicide-prevention group, Samaritan Befrienders
Hong Kong, a total of 438 suicides among people in this age group was recorded
last year, the highest since 1973.
Clarence Tsang, Samaritan executive director, said the
pandemic has left many elderly residents isolated, unable to meet other people,
including family members.

“The elderly homes are all closed for visits. They won’t be
able to see their sons and daughters..their grandchildren. That kind of
loneliness is really tremendous,” he said.
Tsang suggested setting up networks among the elderly so they
can help each other cope with the forced isolation caused by the pandemic.
