Filipino driver charged for death of elderly man in road accident

The Filipino driver has been held without bail since the traffic accident

A 39-year-old Filipino driver was charged with dangerous driving in Eastern Court today, Jul 30, following the death of an elderly local man who was hit by a car the defendant was driving in Wan Chai on Wednesday.

Roland M. Ducusin, a domestic helper, was charged over the death of Lee Kwok-leung, 69, on the westbound lane of Queen’s Road East near the junction of Amoy St.

The prosecution said Ducusin was driving his employer’s car, with plate number JB8022, at the time of the accident.

No plea was taken and the magistrate remanded the defendant in custody until the next  hearing on Oct 8. The prosecutor said further investigation was needed.

The prosecutor also said it would oppose bail due to the seriousness of the offense, but the defense lawyer said Ducusin had no bail application.

No further details about the case was mentioned in court, but in a press release on Jul 28 the police said that the car driven by the defendant was travelling along Amoy St southbound at 8:11am when, approaching 183 Queen’s Road East, it knocked down the victim.

The elderly man was rushed to nearby Ruttonjee Hospital with multiple injuries and in an  unconscious state, but was certified dead at 9:47am.

Ducusin was arrested and has been detained since.
