A burly African man accused of raping a 38-year-old Filipina domestic helper on a stairway in a Central alley in July returned to Eastern Court today, Nov 9, for another hearing of his case.

But Magistrate Bina Chainrai adjourned the case until Dec 21, after the prosecution said it was still waiting for a forensic report from investigators.

Defendant Obi Collins, 36, described in earlier media reports as a recognizance holder from Lesotho, is accused by the alleged victim of grabbing and then raping her on the fifth floor exit staircase of Fai Man Building on 13 Li Yuen Street West.

The Filipina had just left a friend’s birthday party held in a pub in the unguarded building when the alleged rape happened at about 7:30pm on that day, which was a statutory holiday.

The alleged rape was captured on video by an unknown individual, who then circulated it online, creating a ripple across the Filipino community.

Magistrate Chainrai extended Collins’ $10,000 bail, along with the reminder that he should not contact any of the prosecution witnesses, not to leave Hong Kong, and to report to the police three times a week.
