Some 10.2 million
sticks of Philippines-bound suspected illicit cigarettes with a market value of
$28 million have been seized by Hong Kong Customs at Kwai Chung Port.
The cigarettes seized on Mar 18
had a duty potential of about $19 million.
Officers inspecting the seaborne
transshipment container from Cambodia
to the Philippines
said its manifest declared it as a consignment of stationeries.

A day earlier, about 400,000 sticks
of suspected smuggled cigarettes valued at $1 million were intercepted by
Customs at Shenzhen Bay Control Point. The duty potential from the illicit haul
was $700,000.
Customs officers found the
contraband inside 47 cartons mix-loaded with other goods on the truck.

The truck’s 62-year-old male
driver was arrested and the vehicle was detained.
Under the Import and Export
Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo
is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
