A Filipina domestic helper has been charged with theft at Fan Ling Court for
allegedly stealing $78,000 worth of assorted jewelry and cash from her former
employer.
The accused, Sheila Grace Laidan, 45, appeared before
Magistrate Wong Kwok-fai for the reading of the charge against her, but no plea
was taken.
Laidan, who has a daughter and son, was accused of stealing
five gold bracelets, one diamond ring, a pair of silver earrings and $10,000
cash from her female employer, Chan Mei-ching.
The defendant, who came to Hong Kong in 2011 to work as a
domestic helper, is accused of stealing
the jewelry and money between Dec 1 last year and on Wednesday, Feb 12, from
Chan’s house at Man Pan House in Kowloon .

The prosecutor said Laidan was working for the employer at
the time the offenses were committed but had now been terminated.
Magistrate Wong adjourned the hearing until Mar 13 at the
request of the prosecutor, who said police were still checking jewelry items
recovered from a pawnshop to determine if they were the missing property of
Chan.

Laidan’s counsel from the Duty Lawyer Service applied for $300 bail on her behalf, and requested access to her phone so she could contact her friends to raise bail money. He said Laidan had lost her passport so she could not leave
Wong allowed her phone access but rejected her bail
application, citing the seriousness of the offense and the risk that she may
abscond. He told the defendant to go to Kwun Tong Court on Feb 21 for her bail
review.
