When the police asked why they were taking the pipes, Pila
readily told them they were going to sell them, the prosecution said.
The officers called the building manager to verify who owned
the pipes. The latter said the materials were the property of Winland Estate
Management.
After Pila pleaded guilty, the prosecutor said the defendant,
who came to Hong Kong in 2000 and worked for
some time as a bartender, had a clear record. But she later corrected that,
saying that he was scheduled for trial in Eastern Court for an earlier offense.
The defendant was arrested on Aug 30 last year for entering
a building in Cheung Chau and allegedly trying to force a room open.
He was initially charged with attempted burglary and refused
bail, but that was later amended to going equipped for stealing and granted
bail.
In mitigation, the lawyer representing Pila said his client admitted
the offense to police right away because he needed money as his wife was
pregnant.
Grag initially said he was admitting is guilt but did not
agree with the stated value of the pipes. But after talking with his lawyer,
the Indian national agreed to plead guilty. – Vir B. Lumicao
