Pinoy resident's burglary case to be heard at District Court

Charges were read to the defendant in Eastern Court 

A 44-year-old Filipino cleaner has been charged with burglary for allegedly trespassing into a residential unit in North Point with another man in July 2018 and making off with a laptop computer and other valuables.

Angel Villanueva appeared on Dec 17 before Eastern Magistrate Bina Chainrai, who rejected his application for bail after the prosecution said he had three previous burglary offenses.

No plea was taken and his case will be transferred to the District Court.

The prosecution said Villanueva and his companion entered the flat at Coronet Court along King’s Road on Jul 28 last year.
His companion was arrested shortly after, and was turned into a prosecution witness. He is awaiting sentencing pending the resolution of Villanueva’s case.

The prosecution said that, in addition to the laptop, the pair stole two mobile phones, four pairs of earrings, one watch, $200 cash and four packs of cigarettes.

CCTV footage reportedly showed the defendant and his companion breaking into the flat, The second man was then shown putting the stolen goods into the defendant’s bag.

When investigators searched Villanueva’s flat in North Point, they allegedly found some of the stolen items inside.

The prosecution said Villanueva, a Hong Kong resident, came to Hong Kong in 1995 and works as a cleaner. He lives with his wife and their teenage son and daughter. His wife and daughter were at the hearing.

The prosecutor asked for a four-week adjournment to prepare the case bundle for the transfer to the District Court. She also opposed the defendant’s application for bail because of his previous convictions.

The prosecutor said the last time Villanueva was convicted of the same offense was in January 2017, when he was jailed for a month.

The defendant broke into tears as Chainrai told him his bail application was refused and that his case was adjourned until Jan 14 for transfer to the District Court. – Vir B. Lumicao
