An art group that started with just five Filipino migrant workers has now grown, giving them reason to formally organize and appoint their first set of officers.
The new officers took their oath of office before Deputy Consul Germinia V. Aguilar Usudan at the Consulate’s conference room on Jul 14.
They are: Noemi Manguerra, president; Lou Belle Sasutil, vice president; Cecil Eduarte, secretary; Rochelle Razon, workshop coordinator; Hermelin Esmalla, purchasing coordinator; and Cristina Cayat, program coordinator.
The group now has 26 members in all, and many others are showing interest in joining the group. The growth in numbers necessitated dividing tasks so Guhit Kulay can continue holding its free art workshops for beginners from time to time.
One of the newest members is Rhesa Payangdo, a solar art medium artist. Her work involves using a magnifying glass and sunlight to burn a piece of wood and create art.
Another member who just joined is Jacklyn Evangelista, a young mother of two who is getting a lot of notice for her portraits. Apart from sketching, her other talents include singing, playing musical instruments, and karate.
DCG Aguilar said she is very proud of Guhit Kulay because of the members’ enthusiasm to upgrade their skills. She hoped they would also take part in activities at the Consulate, and even conduct workshops on site to entice more Filipinos to go into the arts.
Guhit Kulay was started on May 1, 2017 with the aim of connecting migrant workers with a passion for the arts, and sharing their works through a Facebook page meant to encourage others like them to join.
The five people who formed the group met at an art workshop by Pintura Circle, held at the Consulate back in 2016. The group was originally encouraged to produce 10 canvases for a project of Goldsmith University of London, HKU and Enrich HK in 2017.
That was when they decided to come up with a name and a logo that would become their brand.
Individuals who are interested to join and see the group’s latest works and activities are asked to click “like” on their Facebook page, Guhit Kulay and connect through emailguhitkulay2017 @gmail.com.
