A Filipina domestic worker who was hit by
a wayward taxi in Aberdeen a week ago has
reportedly begun responding to commands but remains in critical condition at Queen Mary
Hospital
This was according to welfare officer
Marivic Clarin of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration who has been
monitoring the case.
Clarin said on Jun 2 that the patient,
Marilou Abunda, has begun making small movements, but has yet to fully regain
consciousness.
Abunda’s friends who visited her in
hospital said the 46-year-old victim could now open her eyes better that in
their previous visit and managed to smile when they talked to her.
Abunda was taken to the hospital
unconscious, and was in a coma for nearly two days.
She was the worst hit among 7 people
injured after a taxi driven by a 70-year-old local man went out of control on
Aberdeen Main road at about 9am on May 27. She had just taken her 10-year-old
ward to school when the accident happened.
On Jun 1, her sister-in-law Josielyn
Abunda and niece Loriepel arrived in Hong Kong from their hometown of Hilongos,
Leyte , and immediately went to the hospital to
be by her side.
Their plane tickets were paid for from a
donation by Hilongos Mayor Albert Villahermosa and the employer of a friend of Abunda who also let them stay in his flat in Pokfulam, and pay for their fare to and from the hospital.
About 20 friends and townmates of Abunda also
pitched in with some cash donation to help cover the expenses of the two while
caring for Abunda.
Earlier on Sunday, Consul Paulo Saret had
told The SUN that the request of Abunda’s kin for air tickets was still awaiting
approval from the Office of the Undersecretary of Migrant Workers Affairs,
unaware that the relatives were already in town,
