An elderly Hong Kong woman
who was allegedly behind an online sex-for-pay operation based in her luxury
Mid-Levels flat, appeared in District Court on May 9 with her two Filipina
helpers who have been tagged as her accomplices.
Heidi Wong Pui-ting, 69, is named as the first defendant in
a charge of conspiracy to live on the earnings of prostitution of others. Her
helpers Jo-an Palpal-latoc, 40, and Jeanette Gallego, 47, are named as co-defendants.
This was the first time Wong stood in the dock with Palpal-latoc
and Gallego, who were in police custody
for nearly eight months before they were freed on bail on Jan 7.
Wong has been out on bail along with her 72-year-old sister
and a male relative who were arrested with her and the maids during a police
raid on May 17 on her house in Tregunter Path, Mid-Levels.
Judge W.K. Kwok adjourned the hearing to Jul 14 at the
prosecution’s request so a separate case of money laundering against Wong and
Pal-palatoc in connection with the prostitution case could proceed in Eastern Court
The two are accused of laundering about $20 million in
earnings from the illicit business.
The next scheduled hearing of this case is on May 21.
“The money laundering cases against D1 (Wong) and D2
(Palpal-latoc) have the same facts as the conspiracy cases to make sure there
are no mishaps and further delays,” the prosecutor told the judge.
The prosecutor said that the money laundering charge will be
consolidated with the sex-for-pay case at the District Court on Jul 4 before
trial is scheduled.
According to the prosecution, the two helpers were tasked to
man several dating websites offering sex for a fee, and taking orders from
prospective foreign clients.
But their employer and her relatives were allegedly behind the
prostitution ring.
