Church group gets tips about managing money

20 March 2019

Church members wave their certificates after the lectures.

Migrant members of a church got more than spiritual awakening when they gathered for two Sundays, Jan 27 and Mar 3, at 27 Pak Tak Street, Tókwawan, Kowloon. With help from trainors by Card Hong Kong Foundation, they also learned how to manage their earnings.

The free financial literacy outreach was part of Card Hong Kong’s consistent effort to help migrant workers realize the value of saving for the future, and spending their hard-earned money according to a set budget.

The church members were grateful for the intensive two-day series of lectures provided them by Card, and saw them as complementing what they learn from God’s teachings.

Sister Zoe  Ulit said, “Financial education is a part of the church’ vision, which is not only for spiritual needs but also for physical necessities. God wants human beings to prosper in all aspects of their lives - spiritually, physically and emotionally.

“To be a complete Christian, hindi ka magiging pagpapala sa kapwa mo kapag hindi ka pinagpala, so kailangan na marunong tayong humawak ng finances natin para maging pagpapala tayo sa ibang tao.”

She also said the two years it took to get the workshop to finally happen was worth the wait.

Mening Basug, who is single and has been working in Hong Kong for the past 20 years, said the lectures opened her eyes about the folly of her spendthrift ways.

Analin Ardeno  from Negros Occidental, who said she already has businesses running, was also grateful for the additional lessons she learned from the workshop.

The participants said they now plan to join Card’s skills training and entrepreneurship workshop.
